Why an arm that only gives money away
The Foundry can only carry a few problems at a time. This is how we back the rest.
The Foundry can only take on a few problems at a time, so Perrin Giving funds other people to work on the rest: think tanks studying cryptocurrency and digital innovation, and the technical projects the resulting rules will apply to.
Grants go to people closer to the work than we are. We do not screen on stage or size, and three people who have already started are as fundable here as an established institution.
We publish every grant with the reasoning behind it, and we say what we expect to get wrong. A funder who only explains the grants that worked is not one you can evaluate.
What it funds
03Think tanks
Independent research on cryptocurrency, digital innovation, and the regulation forming around them. Unrestricted wherever the recipient can accept it, because a grant with strings attached buys the conclusion.
Technical projects
Working systems rather than proposals about them: settlement and custody infrastructure, evaluation tooling, and the unglamorous parts that are hard to raise money for because they demonstrate badly.
The work between them
Standards drafting, replication, and the legal and procurement work that decides whether a working technology is ever allowed to be used. This is where most good systems die, and almost nobody funds it.
