Funding Transparency Policy

1. Why we disclose

1.1A reader deciding how much weight to give a piece of research is entitled to know who paid for the institution that produced it. Transparency about funding is part of the research, not an administrative afterthought.

2. What funders never do

• Approve, review in advance, or alter conclusions
• Choose authors, reviewers, or the timing of publication
• Require the institution to take or avoid a public position
• Receive research earlier or on different terms than the public, beyond an ordinary courtesy notice of publication

3. What we disclose

3.1Where a piece of research is supported by funding restricted to its subject, the funder is named on the research itself. The institution's annual information return, which reports its revenue and expenses as federal law requires, is available on written request under the Corporate Information document.

4. Anonymous donors

4.1Individual donors of unrestricted gifts may ask not to be named publicly. The institution does not accept anonymous funding restricted to a subject of research, and it records the identity of every donor for its own compliance and reporting.

5. Perrin Giving

5.1Perrin Giving is the institution's grants programme. It publishes every grant it makes, with the recipient, the purpose, the reasoning behind the decision, and what the institution expects to get wrong. Grants are unrestricted wherever the recipient can accept them, so that the institution's funding does not buy its grantees' conclusions either.

6. Sources we decline

6.1The institution declines funding on the terms set out in the Gift Acceptance Policy, including any funding conditioned on research outcomes and any funding that would make it materially dependent on a single source with an interest in its conclusions.
